KATHMANDU– A Nepali Army rescue team from the New Bhairabidal Battalion in Manang rescued over 1,500 people, including 200 foreigners, stranded due to heavy snowfall.

The operation was carried out in coordination with local authorities, the Armed Police Force, Nepal Police, and residents, the Nepali Army said.

The snowfall began on Monday and affected several areas, including Tilicho, Khangsar, Pisang, Upper Manang, and Humde.

The snowfall comes amid an ongoing period of extreme weather in Nepal. Meteorologists have warned that very heavy rainfall, similar to that during the Dashain festival in early October, could occur again from Thursday, with Koshi and Madhesh provinces likely to be hit hardest.

Recent rains and snowfall have been driven by westerly winds caused by a depression in the Arabian Sea, affecting Karnali, Lumbini, Gandaki, Bagmati provinces and hilly areas of Koshi province.

Cyclone ‘Montha’, currently devastating parts of India, is expected to bring further heavy rainfall to Nepal. Meteorologists said districts in Bagmati, including the Kathmandu Valley, will see moderate rainfall, while mountainous districts such as Dolpa, Gorkha, Solukhumbu, Manang and Mustang have already reported rain and snowfall, with some places experiencing heavy accumulation.

The extreme weather caused over 50 deaths, injuries to scores of people, and the displacement of thousands due to floods and landslides earlier this month.

Authorities have warned of heightened landslide risks, especially in Koshi province, and urged trekkers, mountaineers, and commuters to follow weather warnings closely.

The Meteorological Forecasting Division has also issued a special bulletin warning of sudden rises in river levels across Koshi, Bagmati and Madhesh provinces. Travellers and farmers are advised to take precautions, as heavy rainfall and snowfall are expected to continue in the coming days.

Talks between government, parties and Gen Z today

This is the first time Karki is bringing the two sides, at odds since the September uprising, together for dialogue.

The government has called a meeting with political parties and Gen Z leaders on Wednesday.

Prime Minister Sushil Karki is set to hold discussions with the political parties and Gen Z leaders in order to create an environment for the upcoming elections, reads the notice.

Snap parliamentary polls have been declared for March 5 next year and the interim government is holding a multi-stakeholder discussion in order to create a conducive environment for the elections.

This is the first time Karki is holding discussions with political parties and Gen Z. Political parties and the youths are at odds after the movement of September 8 and 9.

It was President Ramchandra Paudel who first initiated talks with both political and Gen Z leaders separately and urged them to help build the environment for holding the elections, stressing the polls as the only way out of the present political crisis.

Prime Minister Karki then held separate talks with political leaders where they complained about the deteriorating security situation across the country following the Gen Z movement.

They stated that thousands of prisoners who fled have yet to be captured and that hundreds of weapons taken away by the protesters and inmates haven’t been recovered. On the other hand, Gen Z leaders also doubt the intent of political leaders who allegedly are trying to spoil the outcome and achievements of the September revolt.

In order to mitigate these mutual suspicions, the prime minister has called a meeting at her residence, Baluwatar at 4 pm, an aide to Karki said. The meeting is expected to minimise the misunderstanding between the party leaders and Gen Z representatives.

During the all-party meeting, all sides expressed their commitment to conducting the elections within the stipulated timeframe by creating the right atmosphere for it. The government also hopes to hold free, fair and impartial elections with the support of security agencies.

Soon the government is requesting logistical support from India and China, including large numbers of vehicles to be used in the elections, the aide said. In initial talks, both neighbours sound positive about providing necessary support to us.

Besides formal talks, Karki has also held informal discussions with several party leaders and Gen Z leaders in order to speed up preparations for the elections, the aide added.

The government has also been holding multiple rounds of discussions with the Election Commission to ensure a safe environment for the candidates and voters.

The second-rung leaders from national parties and leaders of eight different Gen Z groups will attend the consultation, people familiar with the arrangements said.
